Do I Have an Eating Disorder?

WE JUST WANT YOU TO KNOW....

* We won't fall asleep on you during appointments;
* We won't judge you by how much you eat/don't eat;
* We won't weight you/ask your weight and:
* We certainly won't tell you to 'just eat' or 'pull your socks up'

Unfortunately, some of our clients have had these happen to them with other support/services. Can you believe that?! We;;, w don't do that. We are here to listen and support you.

You might be thinking, 'well that's good to hear, but do I REALLY have a problem with food?'

We get many emails asking, 'I have a difficult relationship with food at times, but I am not (overweight/underweight/exercising X amount/not being sick more than X times a week/fill in the blank), does that mean I can't seek help or come to therapy or counselling?'

As far as we are concerned at Talking EDs, if someone says that they have difficulties with food and eating and that it affects their life in some way, then they may have an eating disorder or a form of disordered eating and need help and support.

We won't slap a label on you though (unless, of course, yo find it useful to have a name for the problems you are experiencing) as we working with everyone individually. We are interested in you and how things are for you - not lists of un-representative criteria from textbooks. Talking with therapists and counsellors who actually understand too it a bonus!

Feel free to drop us an email: support@eatingdisorderscotland.co.uk or browse the website too: www.eatingdisorderscotland.co.uk

We now have a lead psychotherapist (Alexandra) and two fully qualified and experienced affiliate therapists to (Stephen and Shirley) here at Talking EDs.  We will shortly have a newly qualified therapist/counsellor, Sue, joining the team too and she will provide some *free therapy sessions on Friday afternoons as she is extremely keen to gain more experience in eating disorders and feels very passionate about working in the field (* Sue will provide free therapy sessions, however, clients taking advantage of this will be required to pay £15/session to cover room hire and some of her travelling costs)

You deserve help and support from those who really understand and 'get it'. Get in touch with is to discover how we can help and support you. We also provide consultations to other professionals or organisations looking for support regarding eating disorder and stress management and therapy/counselling sessions to carers/family/friends/supporters of someone experiencing an eating disorder.

We look forward to hearing from you. Alexandra :-)

Focus on..... Binge Eating Disorder

  Focus on..... Binge Eating Disorder (BED)   Binge Eating Disorder or BED is often characterised by someone consuming very large amounts of food over short period of time, even if they are not hungry. Although, we often see another form of binge eating that is characterised by an almost constant 'grazing' of food, which may amount to a large volume of food over time. BED is almost 2x as common in women than in men, although gender differences are less pronounced than in Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa. BED has been found is all cultures and ethnicities. BED was formally classified in 2014 as distinct Eating Disorder and now has formal classification in DSM-5. Keeping in mind that everyone experiencing BED is different and BED may present differently (we are all different and unique, after all!), some of the signs and symptoms of BED include: * Feeling out-of-control when eating during a binge episode. * Often hiding food (before it has been eaten or hiding empty packets a

BODY IMAGE AND BODY DYSMORPHIC DISORDER: What is it?

BODY IMAGE AND BODY DYSMORPHIC DISORDER As we said yesterday, this week in Mental Health Awareness Week 2019. This is a national awareness week and the theme this year is Body Image. See Monday's post to see what we are doing this week. We will also be posting everyday this week on Facebook, Twitter and the blog about Body Image and BDD (Body Dysmorphic Disorder). Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), or body dysmorphia, is a mental health condition related to Body Image where a person spends a lot of time worrying about flaws in their appearance. These flaws are often unnoticeable to others. People of any age can have BDD and it affects anyone of any gender or sex. Having BDD does not mean you are vain or self-obsessed. It can be very upsetting and have a big impact on your life. Low mood, anxiety, emotional dysregulation, stress, trauma, self-harm and eating disorders are some of the other conditions that can co-occur with BDD. Some o
