Eating Disorders Awareness Week 2021: Binge Eating Disorder

EATING DISORDERS AWARENESS WEEK 2021:
BINGE EATING DISORDER

This week is national Eating Disorders Week 2021 and the focus this year is on Binge Eating Disorder #EDAW #EDAW2021

Binge Eating Disorder (BED) was first recognised by Albert Stunkard in 1959 (around the same time as Night Eating Syndrome (NES) was first discussed). Stunkard identified 'Binge Eating Disorder' to describe the same type of bingeing seen in NES, but 'without the noctural exclusive component'.

Nevertheless, it wasn't until 1992/1993 that BED was proposed as an eating disorder. It was, consequently, included in DSM-4 under the classification of EDNOS (Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified).

It wasn't until fairly recently that Binge Eating Disorder was included in DSM-5 as an eating disorder in its own right (despite it being one of the most frequent types of eating disorder).

We will post other facts and information about Binge Eating Disorder throughout this EDAW21 on Facebook, Twitter and our Blog.
