About Grief and Bereavement

Did you know that we offer Grief and Beareavement Counselling too?

Our experienced therapist, Michelle, offer grief and bereavement counselling at our offices in Glasgow city centre on Wednesdays.

Grief and loss is complicated and messy. There's no simple way of putting it. That's how it is.

In therapy and counselling, I often hear clients say that family and friends keep telling them that ' you should be over this by now'; 'how can you still feel sad about X' or even 'pull your socks up and get over it' (I have to admit, I shriek inside when I hear that, arghhh!).

The thing is, hearing these things 1) isn't helpful or validating; and 2) misses the point when it comes to grief, loss and bereavement.
We can also experience grief, loss and bereavement for lots of different things: it's not just in response to the loss of a loved one.

We can experience this in relation to the loss of a beloved parent, friend, colleague or pet (I lost a beloved cat in March 2019 and then my mum in November 2019 and I'm still grieving - it's a terrible experience as I'm sure some of you will know).

We can experience it in relation to loss of health, a job, moving house/location, loss of elements of our identity, a interest/hobby, an object that had meaning for us, something in our environment and even a value/attitude/viewpoint.

Neither is grief, loss and bereavement 'a straight line'. It goes more like the diagram below.

Recognise this in yourself? Maybe you are experiencing this now. Then we recommend seeking help and support when you can to help you through the process of loss and grief.

We can support you through difficult times. There's no pressure, no expectations, no hurry. Sessions go at your pace and we focus on what you need to focus on right now.

Feel free to get in touch for more information, to book an appointment or if you have any questions. We can provide in-person appointments in Glasgow and online appointments in Scotland and England. Our contact details are below.

We are here to listen and support.

Best wishes,
Alexandra

Focus on.... Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (or EDNOS)

Focus on.... EDNOS/OSFED Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (or EDNOS) is now increasingly known as OSFED (Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorder) accounts for the highest percentage of eating disorders. EDNOS/OSFED is just as serious and debilitating as any other form of eating disorder and needs to be taken more seriously. Unfortunately, however, in our experience, this is often not the case and many are not given appropriate treatment or support (whether from family, friends, professionals and others) and the condition can deteriorte and even change into another form of eating disorder. WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT EDNOS/OSFED? Then read on..... EDNOS/OSFED is the most commonly diagnosed eating disorder in clinical settings. It has often been described as ‘partial syndrome’; however, in our opinion, referring to an eating disorder as 'partial' presents several problems, namely that the client or patient is denied support. EDNOS/OSFED describes a form eating d...

BODY IMAGE AND BODY DYSMORPHIC DISORDER: What is it?

BODY IMAGE AND BODY DYSMORPHIC DISORDER As we said yesterday, this week in Mental Health Awareness Week 2019. This is a national awareness week and the theme this year is Body Image. See Monday's post to see what we are doing this week. We will also be posting everyday this week on Facebook, Twitter and the blog about Body Image and BDD (Body Dysmorphic Disorder). Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), or body dysmorphia, is a mental health condition related to Body Image where a person spends a lot of time worrying about flaws in their appearance. These flaws are often unnoticeable to others. People of any age can have BDD and it affects anyone of any gender or sex. Having BDD does not mean you are vain or self-obsessed. It can be very upsetting and have a big impact on your life. Low mood, anxiety, emotional dysregulation, stress, trauma, self-harm and eating disorders are some of the other conditions that can co-occur with BDD. Some o...
